Categories and Category Tabs

An image or video can be categorized in one of six different categories: Review, Safe, Sexual, Child Porn, Personal, or Gaming. Each category has its own criteria for inclusion. Some images may appear in multiple categories as a result of multiple users submitting the image or video into different cateories.

To review the images and videos categorized under a specific category, click on the catgories tab in the Thumbnail View panel.

Review
The "Review" category includes all images and videos that have not been previously categorized. When you are using SurfRecon in Offline mode, this category may include several images or videos that have already been categorized, but are cartegorized as for review due to the limited access to the database.

Safe
The "Safe" category includes images and videos that do not contain any nudity or other sexual context. "Safe" includes images and videos from operating systems, applications, and websites. An additional safe category is the "Personal" category, which includes safe images that are more personal in nature, such as digital family photos or digital photos taken of friends.

Sexual
The "Sexual" category is a broad category that not only includes pornographic content, but any content that is sexual in nature. For example, a husband and wife kissing, a passionate embrace, lingerie, or a person making a suggestive gesture are all sexual in nature and belong in the "Sexual" category—even though they are not pornographic.

The "Sexual" category is intentionally broad to avoid debates concerning "what is or is not pornographic and/or obscene?" All sexual content, whether obscene, pornographic, educational, artistic, or innocent belong to the "Sexual" category. The only exception is child pornography which is classified under its own category "Child Porn" and can only be submitted by approved members of law enforcement.

Child Pornography
The "Child Porn" category includes images that have been previously categorized as child pornography by members of the law-enforcement community.

Personal
The "Personal" category is for personal images, such as family photos, photos of friends, or other photos that you do not want to submit to the SurfRecon database, but that you want to remove from the "Review" category. When you categorize an image as "Personal", the digital signature is stored locally. If you delete your copy of SurfRecon or use a different copy of SurfRecon, the images will not be pre-categorized. Updating your software has no effect on your Personal cache.

Gaming
The "Gaming" category includes images from gambling and gaming websites and applications.
